Sunday's Breakdown; Not Much Action But Still Memorable
10.10.10 NHL Scoreboard - Recap - Boxscore - Highlights
Boston 3
Phoenix 0
The Bruins learned a lesson from their opening game with phoenix on Saturday, wasting no time bettering the defensive game and making smarter decisions with the puck as well. Nathan Horton continued his scoring streak with a goal and an assist to add to his two goals on Saturday, which gives him 4 points in 2 games. In addition to his big body presence, Milan Lucic also potted a goal. The story of the night was second overall draft pick Tyler Seguin scoring his first NHL goal on a rediculous play that saw Michael Ryder flip the puck in the air from his own zone ahead of the Phoenix defense to a streaking Seguin who caught it from behind with his glove and went in alone on Ilya Bryzgalov and sneaked a backhander off the left post. In net, Tim Thomas got the shutout with 29 saves as he tries to return to form this season.
Los Angeles 1
Calgary 3
Sunday night saw Jonathan Bernier get the start in net for LA, who preformed very well allowing only 2 goals on 31 shots for a .935 save percentage. After Jonathan Quick's performance on Saturday, it is evident that LA has a ridiculous goaltending tandem. Despite strong defensive play, LA couldn't pour on the offense as Miikka Kiprusoff faced only 22 shots for the flames. Curtis Glencross scored a beauty of a shorthanded goal as Glencross got a stick on a pass at the point from LA's Jack Johnson and Brett Sutter fired the puck to a streaking Glencross as he made Bernier miss with a pokecheck. Newly acquired Calgary center Brendan Morrison had two assists on the night. Flames forward Rene Bourque left the game in the first period after colliding with LA's Kevin Westgarth. He did not return.
Florida 2
Edmonton 3
This contest proved to be a game of role reversals. The Panthers managed to get 28 puck on Nikolai Khabibulin who once again played very well only allowing two goals for a .929 save percentage. At the other end of the ice, the Oliers were terrible on offense, only generating 13 shots on net while being the benefactors of good luck. Florida goaltender Tomas Vokoun had a rough night as he had trouble tracking down redirected pucks for a abysmal .769 save percentage. The newly acquired secondary scoring was good for the Panthers as Marty Reasoner scored two goals, receiving two assists from Steve Bernier. Dustin Penner, Ryan Jones, and Shawn Horcoff scored goals for Edmonton while Taylor Hall picked up his first NHL point with an assist.
