Habs add Halpern

The Montreal Canadiens have signed free-agent forward Jeff Halpern to a one year $600,000 contract on Tuesday.

The signing (no doubt) is to replace the loss of Glen Metropolit on the off-season to better third line scoring depth.

Halpern split the 2009-2010 year between Tampa Bay and Los Angelis in a combined 71 games. He posted 9 goals and 10 assists with a -14 rating.

Halpern has never been an offensive juggernaut, but will add some grit and timely goals to this Montreal club. 10 years NHL experience has yielded 131 goals, 185 assists, and 554 penalty minutes in his 720 games played. Halpern, a 5’11 198lbs. center/winger, is a slight question mark of a signing for the Habs as his smaller frame doesn’t really fill the larger-bodied void in Quebec, but Halpern has always been consistent, and will definitely play to his cap value and help Montreal in the upcoming season.
