Sharks Add Winchester

The San Jose Sharks general manager and vice president Doug Wilson announced Monday the signing of tough guy Brad Winchester on Monday. The contract was agreed upon at one year, worth $725,000.

Winchester was brought into training camp on a tryout basis on September 15th, and has played hard to earn a spot on the roster. The 30 year old played in five preseason games with the Sharks, tallying one goal and one assist with a +2 rating. In 2010-2011 with the Anaheim Ducks he appeared in 76 games where he tallied 10 goals and 16 points with a -18 rating and 114 penalty minutes.

“We feel that our training camp was as competitive as it ever has been and Brad came into it and earned a spot on our roster,” stated Wilson. “He brings a rugged, veteran presence to our lineup and he does whatever it takes to be a good teammate.”

Winchester adds size, strength, and grit to the already larger bodied Sharks – a team that is fully expected of itself to go all the way this year and clinch the Stanley Cup that has eluded them, for all too long. Winchester stands at 6’5 231lbs. and packs a large a literal punch, something the Sharks can benefit from on their fourth checking line against the larger teams in the conference.

Winchester has played for four different teams in his six years in the NHL and has recorded 31 goals and 58 points with a -37 rating and 464 penalty minutes in 323 games. Winchester won’t play big minutes, nor will he put up big points for the Sharks, but then again his job will be in the form of one thing and one thing only; beat up the opponent.
