Caps Ink Chimera

After a solid 2010-2011 performance with the Washington Capitals, Jason Chimera has landed a new deal with the team for two years worth $3.5 million. Chimera will earn $ 1.8 million this year, and $1.7 million the next.

Since being acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets in December, 2009, Chimera has appeared in 120 games as a Capital, 81 of which he played last season. He has netted 17 goals and 26 assists with a -4 rating during his time with the Caps. His effectiveness as a solid checking line winger paid dividends in the post season last year as he scored 2 game winning goals against the New York Rangers and tallied 2 assists with a -3 rating through 9 games.

"He's an older guy, but the one thing that's never going to give out on him is his skating, which is becoming so paramount in this game," Washington coach Bruce Boudreau said. "He knows how to play. He's a big strong guy. He's an emotional guy.

"He's good in our locker room, and we do think he's got the potential to get between 15 and 20 goals. And he seemed to score the big goal at the big time for us."

The 32 year old is 10 seasons experienced, having split his career with Edmonton, Columbus, and Washington. Through 581 games he has scored 98 goals and 117 assists for 215 points with a -22 rating.

"For me it was a no-brainer," Chimera said. "It was nice that they showed some confidence in me."
"It's nice to get something done before the season, that's for sure. No matter what, it weighs on your mind if you're coming into a contract season."

The Caps have added size and defensive depth to their roster during the off-season with names like Troy Brouwer and Joel Ward, something the team was obviously lacking in the post-season last year. The team looks much stronger going forward, and Chimera’s presence with definitely better the team in their efforts to finally hoist the Stanley Cup.
