Canucks Claim Weise
The Vancouver Canucks have claimed forward Dale Weise off waivers today from the New York Rangers. Weise was likely headed to Connecticut of the American Hockey League, where he played the majority of the year in the Rangers’ minor league system.
The Rangers were high on Weise last year, a year in which the Canucks made a push to acquire Weise at the trade deadline. They've finally got their way.
The 23 year old re-signed with the Rangers to a one-year contract in June to a one year deal worth $605,000. The news comes just after the large amount of veteran cuts of the Canucks following preseason. Weise will likely report to Manitoba at some point before the start of the season, adding depth to the already talent filled organization. The deal also puts the Canucks over $32,000 over the NHL salary cap.
The 6’2 202lbs. forward was drafted in 2008 111th overall, and made his NHL debut last year where he dressed for the Rangers ten times. None of the NHL games played yielded a point, and he was relegated down to Connecticut of the AHL where he totaled 18 goals and 38 assists and a -14 rating with 73 PIMS in 47 games.
Through 194 total games played in the AHL Weise has totaled 57 goals and 54 assists with 111 points.
