Back In Biz
The Phoenix Coyotes announced Wednesday that team enforcer Paul Bissonnette has agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension. According to CapGeek.com, he will earn $725,000 next season and $750,000 in 2013-2014. He has one year remaining on his current deal at $625,000.
The 26 year-old has spent the last two seasons with the Coyotes after having been claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Penguins. He has appeared 89 times with the Coyotes over the past two years, collecting four goals and two assists with a +4 rating and 188 penalty minutes.
Bissonnette does not deliver in the goal scoring department, but he does deliver in the physically punishing aspect of the game. The Coyotes are not the biggest team up front, and Bissonnette’s 6’3 220lbs. frame will serve them well over the next few years as he will protect young players such as Mikkel Boedker and Lauri Korpikoski.
The 2003 121st overall draft pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins may not be leaned on every night to dress, but head coach Dave Tippett has a good feel for Bissonnette, as playing him in the right situations has proved effective.
Having played just 15 games for the Penguins before his emergence with the Coyotes, his NHL totals are four goals and seven points in 104 games with 210 PIMS. In the AHL, he has played 161 games, scoring 13 goals and 30 points with a whopping 387 penalty minutes.
The outlandish character is well known for more than his on-ice presence. He has historically been the NHL’s most outspoken and wild characters on the social network of Twitter. His outrageous comments and photos over the years have caught the attention of the fans, media, and most recently the NHL. He is one of the primary reasons for the NHL’s new rules against social media in general, outlining what is and what is not acceptable in terms of public exposure. His Twitter account, biznasty2point0, is well documented, and all over the internet usually consisting of himself in a speedo with either an ugly car, a hot chick, or a homeless guy. The NHL has put an end to this – opinions understandably vary.
