Coyotes Cut Wellwood; Bound For KHL

Center Kyle Wellwood has been released from his tryout contract with the Phoenix Coyotes, and it appears he has wasted no time in finding a new job. Phoenix brass had decided the club would rather see what once very promising prospect Kyle Turris can bring to the table over Wellwood. This decision was most likely made taking into consideration Turris's age and high potential ceiling as opposed to Wellwood's underachiever status and penchant for being out of shape and lazy.

Wellwood must have really felt some urgency concerning his job security as it is being reported by Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet that Wellwood has signed a contract with Atlant Moscow Oblast of the Kontinental Hockey League that could see him earn over $1 million. One would certainly think due to his deft hands and somewhat creative ability that a team with holes down the middle to fill such as the Oilers or Flames would have given him a look to stay in the NHL. Apparently Wellwood wasn't willing to take that risk and needed a guarantee. If Wellwood is proactive about the decision made by Phoenix, he will use his time overseas to establish his endurance and conditioning. One thing he wont get in Russia is a Stanley Cup ring.
