Weight Another Year

Veteran forward Doug Weight has been re-signed by the New York Islanders to a one year contract worth $850,000.

39 year-old Weight has played 1,220 games over his 19 year NHL career as he now moves into his 20th, and quite possibly last, NHL season.  He will now head into his third year as a New York Islander. This past year Weight tallied one goal and 16 assists in 36 games.
“Doug has played an important role in helping to develop our young players over the past two seasons and we’re excited to see him continue his historic career on Long Island,” Islanders General Manager Garth Snow said.

Weight is a proven player and superb leader. He was named Captain of the team October 2, 2009. In his 1,220 games he has tallied 276 goals and 748 assists for 1,024 points. He has split his career with the Rangers, Oilers, Blues, Hurricanes, Ducks and Islanders. In 2006, Weight won his only Stanley Cup championship to date with the Carolina Hurricanes, a first for both he and the Canes’ organization. Weight reached the 1,000 point milestone with the Islanders on January 2, 2009, becoming the eighth American-born player and 73rd NHL player to reach 1,000 points.

With a ton of youth on the Island, most notably 2009 1st overall draft pick John Tavares, Weight will play an important role in developing young players into future stars with his leadership qualities over his on-ice performance.

I wish Doug well, and hope this year isn’t the last year that number 93 takes to the ice.

  1. Great article, and I agree, hope this isn't his last. I remember well the year he won the Stanley Cup with Carolina. That was fantastic!
