Oilers Retain Cogliano

The Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms with center/winger Andrew Cogliano to a one year, $1.0 million contract on Friday.

The 23 year-old was selected by the Oilers 25th overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, and has been viewed as one of the important pieces to Edmonton’s future.

After a real impressive rookie campaign, Cogliano’s point production has gradually slumped through his three years in the NHL. Cogliano scored 18 goals in each of his first two seasons with a combined total 83 points. In his third year (last year) he tallied only 10 goals and 18 assists for his struggling Edmonton club.

The Oilers have a lot of young talent that seemed to underperform collectively last year in Edmonton’s horrid 2009-2010 season.

Some of the youth, Cogliano included, has come into question in Edmonton since the beginning of last season. The Oilers have retained the faith in some of these youngsters trying to find their way in the National Hockey League. Cogliano will have the chance to make ground next year to solidify himself as a legitimate piece of their re-build for years to come.

  1. Any news on Alex Plante? He played in a few games this past season with Edmonton, but haven't heard anything since.

  2. Sure thing.

He spent most of his season down in Springfield with Edmonton's AHL affiliate. He played 49 games recording 2 goals and 7 assists, and was called up to Edmonton for 4 games tallying 1 assist.

He's only 21 at 6'4 225bls. and he's still growing in terms of muscle. He's great defensively and offensively is comparable to Sheldon Souray. He projects to be a second pairing two-way defenseman and we should be seeing plenty of him this year as Edmonton is dying to shop Souray and get their kids more time on the ice. His only weak spot is in his mobility, but if he's paired with the right guy he should be just fine in the NHL.
