Caps Extend Poti
Defenseman Tom Poti will be a large piece of the puzzle in Washington until 2013 at least. Poti was inked to a two year contract extension worth $5.75mil that will kick in after the completion of the 2010-2011 season. The deal will see him make $3mil during the 2011-2012 season and $2.75mil during the 2012-2013 season.
Given the Capitals defensive woes at times, Poti is a solid all-around blueliner to keep around. In 70 games last season, Poti had 4 goals and 20 assists while playing at a +26. Poti is a big man who can get physical while effectively moving the puck around. If coach Bruce Boudreau decides to commit to a slightly more reponsible game in his own end, Poti will be a great player to have in the locker room allowing young guns Karl Alzner and John Carlson to come along at a more reasonable pace while having a great mentor.
Poti has put up 318 points (67g-251a) while having a career +50 rating while splitting 787 NHL games with the Oliers, Islanders, Rangers, and Capitals.
